Hockey Glossary of Statistics

Forward / Defense Statistics – Goalie Statistics

Games Played (GP)A player is credited with a game played if he steps on the ice for any length of time or serves a penalty.
Minutes Played (Min)The amount of time a player is on the ice.
Goals (G)Scored when a puck goes between the goalposts from the stick of an attacking player and entirely crosses the red line between the goalposts.
Assists (A)Awarded to the last two players who touch the puck before a teammate scores provided no defender plays or possesses the puck in between.
Points (Pts)Credited to a player who records either a goal or an assist.
Formula: G+A
Shots On Goal (SOG)A scoring attempt that would enter the goal if not stopped by a goalie.
Short Handed Goals (SHG)Goals scored when a team is killing off a penalty.
Penalties in Minutes (PIM)The total time a player receives for minor, major or misconduct infractions.
Blocked Shots (BkS)Player other than the goalie stops or deflects a shot on goal.
Giveaways (GvA)Player gives the puck away to the other team.
Takeaways (TkA)Player steals the puck from the other team.
Faceoff Percentage (FO%)Percentage of faceoffs that are won.

Faceoffs Lost (FOL)Number of Faceoffs Lost
Checks (Chks)Any contact initiated by a defending player against an opponent to get the puck away from him or slow him down.
HitsAnother term used for checks. Can be used for alternative stats.
Plus-Minus (+/-)A plus is given to a player who is on the ice when his team scores an even-strength or shorthanded goal, while a minus is given to players on the ice when opponents score in those situations. The difference is the plus-minus rating.
Power Play Goals (PPG)Goals scored while the other team is playing shorthanded.
Shooting Percentage (Pct)The number of goals scored as a percentage of shots taken.
Game Winning Goals (GWG)Goals that leave a team one goal ahead of the opponent.
Game Tying Goals (GTG)The final goal in a tie game.
Points Per Game (Pts/G)Average number of points scored in each game.
Shootout Goals (SHOG)Number of goals scored during overtime shootout.
Shootout Attempts (SHOA)Number of shot attempts during overtime shootout.
Shootout Percentage (SHO%)Percentage of goals during overtime shootout.

Wins (W)The number of victories by a particular goaltender.
Losses (L)The number of defeats by a particular goaltender.
OT and/or S/O Wins (OTW)The number of wins by a particular goaltender during a shootout or overtime.
OT and/or S/O Losses (OTL)The number of defeats by a particular goaltender during a shootout or overtime.
Ties (T)The number of games where goaltenders allow the same number of goals as their opponent.
Saves (S)Refers to the number of shots on goal stopped by a goaltender.
Shutouts (SHO)Refers to the number of games in which a goaltender does not allow a goal.
Goals Allowed (GA)A goaltender’s statistic referring to the number of scores he has allowed.
Penalties in Minutes (PIM)The total time a player receives for minor, major or misconduct infractions.
Goals Allowed Average (GAA)Refers to the number of goals allowed per standard game time.
Formula: (GA * (Standard Game Minutes)) / (Min)
Percent Saved (Pct)Refers to the number of goals allowed per shots faced by a goaltender.
SavesRefers to the number of shots on goal stopped by a goaltender.
Shootout Goals Against (SHOGA)Number of goals scored against the goalie during overtime shootout.
Shootout Attempts Against (SHOAA)Number of shot attempts against the goalie during overtime shootout.
Shootout Percentage Against (SHO%A)Percentage of goals against the goalie during overtime shootout.
